Carolyn Terhune, Topeka Capital-Journal Marketing Services Director, died Friday in her Stockholm, Sweden, hotel room of an apparent heart attack.
Terhune was visiting in Sweden while en route to an international newspaper marketing association meeting in Norway.
A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday in Topeka with burial at a future time in a McPherson cemetery, her sister, Donna Jansen, said.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church for Carolyn Coe Terhune, 55, marketing services director for the Topeka Capital-Journal, who died of natural causes Friday, Sept. 3, 1993, in her Stockholm, Sweden, hotel room where she was traveling in advance of next week’s International Newspaper Marketing Association Europe Conference in Lillehammer, Norway. She was president of the International Association.
She was born July 25, 1938, in McPherson, the daughter of Dr. Harold E. and Pauline Decker Coe. She grew up in McPherson, graduated from the University of Kansas with a double major in social work and psychology, and did graduate work at the University of Hawaii earning her masters in education.
Before she joined the staff of The Topeka Capital-Journal she was an elementary school teacher and community affairs director at KTSB-TV in Topeka.
Within IMNA, she served as president and president-elect, on the International board of directors, and as Central Region president and board member. She was a member of the advisory board of the Jane C. Stormont Women’s Health Center and chair of the Topeka Civic Theatre Russian Theatre Exchange.
She previously served as president of the Topeka Advertising Federation, president of the Topeka Professional Chapter of Women in Communications, Inc., president of Topeka Friends of the Zoo, Commissioner of Kansas Commission for the 125th, on the board of United Way of Greater Topeka, president of the Public Relations Society of Topeka, vice chair of the Topeka Carousel Restoration Commission, governor of the 9th District American Advertising Federation, and a member of the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce.
She received the Women in Communications Distinguished Service Award, midwest region in 1984, the Silver Medal Award from the Topeka Advertising Federation in 1986 and was Ad Woman of the Year, 9th District, American Advertising Federation in 1987. She was selected in 1984 as a member of the first Leadership Greater Topeka class.
Survivors include her mother, Pauline Coe, Topeka; a sister, Donna Janssen, Valley Forge, Pa.; three nieces, two nephews; and three step-children.
Services will be held later in McPherson.
